How do I clean my screen?

The screen of your laptop or computer is sometimes really in need of a proper cleaning and sometimes your TV also needs a deep clean. However, it is not a good idea to just put some detergent on it. So, we have made a list of the best way to clean your screen.

Cleaning your screen, yourself

There are many different screens on different devices. And each monitor has its own user manual. Some, such as Apple monitors, have a special coating. Cleaning with alcohol is therefore not a good idea. This can damage the display. But how do you know what you can and can’t do to clean your monitor? We have described this for you per monitor and device.

Computer and laptop screens

Every screen is vulnerable. So, it is important that you handle your screen with care. Possible damages are often permanent and therefore can’t be repaired. If you want to minimize the risk of damaging your screen than the following tips will help you clean your monitor without damaging it:

– Use a microfiber cloth* with water to clean the monitor. Avoid rough and paper towels. They can damage the monitor;

– Make sure the monitor is not connected to power when cleaning. Doing so may result in hazardous situations. Power and moisture do not mix;

– Keep liquids away from your monitor. Too much moisture can damage your monitor, so put water in a plant spray and spray the cloth.

– Do not allow moisture to enter the openings of the monitor. This will damage the components and may cause your monitor to stop working;

– Do not use solvents or abrasives. These agents are far too aggressive, and your monitor will not be able to withstand them;

– Do not spray water directly on the monitor. Too much moisture can cause your monitor to stop working.

* Microfiber cloths are also called miracle wipes because they have many advantages over other cleaning cloths. For example, with microfiber cloths you need much less power because the microfiber cloth also works well at low friction. In addition, you don’t need to use any detergent (Microfiber cloths already work well with only water. Did you know that a microfiber cloth with water removes 99.9% of bacteria?) or you can greatly reduce the use of cleaning agents. Because you can reduce the amount of detergent, you also have less chance of damaging the equipment during your cleaning activities. Microfiber cloths can be bought at almost every supermarket!

Please note:

Many screens have an oleophobic coating. This coating protects the screen partly against grease from, for example, your fingers. Therefore, be careful with cleaning agents. It is possible that you damage this coating and thus the protection of your screen.

We recommend using only a microfiber cloth with water! Or cleaning agents that are suitable for monitors.

TV screen

You can also easily clean your TV screen. There are many different cleaning products for sale and their price varies a lot. Cleaning can also be done with, for example, water with vinegar meaning that you don’t need to buy a special cleaning agent in order to clean your TV screen. The best way to do this is with a microfiber cloth. You can dip this cloth in a little water until it is slightly moist. With this slightly moist cloth just gently rub the TV screen until all dust and fingerprints are gone.

Below you will find a step-by-step list of everything:

1.       Make sure your TV is turned off and cooled down.

2.       Grab a microfiber cloth and lightly moisten it with water.

3.       Do not wet the cloth too much. Too much water may cause your TV screen to malfunction.

4.       Gently wipe the cloth over the TV screen. Repeat until all dirt and stains are gone.

5.       Wait until the TV is completely dry before turning it on again.

What should I do if my TV screen is broken or old?

Is your monitor really broken or so old that it no longer functions properly? Then you can buy a new one and get rid of the old one without harming the environment. You can do this by having your monitor recycled.

More and more companies are contributing to the circular economy. This way they reduce waste. And ensure that materials can be reused. At more than 3,000 DIY stores, supermarkets and other stores there are hand-in containers in which you can put your monitor.

What is a sit-stand desk?

The name says it all, a sit-stand desk is a desk that you can adjust in height from sitting height to standing height.

These desks are adjustable from approximately 65cm to 130cm (depending on the type of desk). The purpose of a sit-stand desk is to promote the alternation between sitting and standing work. This alternation has different effects and ensures, among other things, an improvement in health. You will read more about this later. The adjustable desk can be divided into 2 types of desks:

  1. Non-electric desk
  2. Electric desk

1. Non-electric desk

The non-electric sit-standing desk can be manually adjusted in height through a crank mechanism. You can turn this crank until your desk reaches the desired height. This type of desk does not go as high as an electrically adjustable desk and is therefore not completely a sit-stand desk. Crank desks are also possible as adjustable desks up to a maximum seat height of 88cm.

2. Electric desk

An electric desk is very easy to adjust at the push of a button. The electric sit-stand desk is equipped with one or more motors and buttons underneath the desktop. This allows you to adjust the height precisely to your liking. Some electric sit-stand desks have a memory display that can remember the different positions.

Both types of desks are possible in different versions. For example, you can choose to have a single desk, a duo desk with workstations on both sides or even a wing desk with multiple workstations.

Desk at the right standing height

The ideal working height of a desk differs per person. One person sometimes likes to work at a height that can cause complaints for the other. Standing work is often done at a height of 86cm to 130cm. A good standing height can be determined by resting your arms on the tabletop. If your arms are at 90 degrees, then this is the right height. In practice this is often at navel height.

5 Advantages of a sit-stand desk

Healthy, ergonomic and dynamic working is how you could summarize the new way of working. Most people will agree that a lot of sitting is unhealthy, but how do you really ensure the best balance in sitting and standing? It is crucial that you have a good balance of 75% sitting and 25% standing. A sit-stand desk is a super handy tool, because standing and moving while working is being stimulated more and made easier with a sit-stand desk. To improve your posture even further you can also think of for example installing monitor arms. To show why you should work with this a sit-stand desk you will find 5 advantages of working at a sit-stand desk.

1 – Prevents or counteracts back pain

When you are standing, the spine has a better and more natural posture compared to when you are sitting. It ensures a more balanced distribution between the vertebrae in the lower back, which makes working standing up pleasant for people with back problems.

2 – Easier to walk away from a standing position

While working in a standing position, the threshold for walking away from the workplace is much smaller than from a sitting position. This stimulates your movement during work!

3 – Standing while working leads to productivity gains

This is because standing makes the brain more active. After lunch, or after the coffee break, it is therefore more difficult to nap. Ultimately, by stimulating standing work, productivity will increase.

4 – Working while standing can prevent several illnesses.

The correct combination and balance of sitting and standing can prevent diseases such as obesity, diabetes II, cardiovascular diseases.

5 – You save time with standing meetings.

If you were to change meetings to standing meetings, you can save time. Research has shown that this can lead to up to 25%-time savings without affecting the quality of the decisions.

Take advantage of moving while working

Not only can a lot of benefits be gained by working in a standing position, but benefits can also be achieved by working while moving. Physical activity provides an even more intensive way of health gain, but here too there is a maximum. We advise you, based on substantiated advice, not to work in motion for more than 90 minutes per day on a working day of 8 hours. By moving while working we mean working while biking on a desk bike, or walking on a desk treadmill.

If we disregard all desk aide and only use a sit-stand desk, then there are still many health benefits to be gained and you yourself can also improve your health further by doing things like:

  • Taking the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Moving your car further away from work
  • Getting your own coffee
  • Moving the coffee machine further away
  • Choosing a longer walking route

All in all, a lot of improvement is possible with working at a sit-stand desk and by moving more at your workplace.

What Monitor Arm Do I Need?

The advantage of buying a monitor arm.

When using a computer for a long time, it is important to place the monitor at the correct height. This can be done with a monitor arm. This ensures that the height, viewing angle and distance can be set correctly. Nowadays there are more and more Flex workplaces, where everyone must be able to set up the workplace correctly. A monitor arm makes it easier for everyone to set up the monitor correctly.

With a standard monitor riser, it is possible to place the monitor on an elevation, but the viewing angle cannot be adjusted with this. In addition, a monitor riser takes up a lot of space on the worktop. A monitor arm ensures a better posture, because the monitor can be placed at the correct height, distance and viewing angle. As a result, we have less of a tendency to lean forward or sit down. All this reduces the stress on the body, which can prevent any work-related complaints.

There are many kinds of monitor arms:

  • Monitor arm for 1 monitor
  • Double monitor arm
  • Arm for your laptop
  • Arm for your tablet

Advantages of your monitor at the right height:

  • It improves your posture
  • It reduces the risk of health issues
  • More space on your desk
  • The settings can be adjusted quickly and easily
  • The viewing angle is adjustable

What should you pay attention to when setting up the monitor arm?

Place

It is important to start by placing the monitor directly in front of you. This ensures that you are less likely to (unconsciously) sit crookedly or that your head is turned to one side all the time. If you use multiple monitors, it is important to place the screen that you use most directly in front of you. Otherwise, you will have to look a little to the left and right for both screens, which can cause problems.

Distance

We have a handy trick to determine the correct distance. Sit comfortably in your chair and move towards the table. Now stretch out your arm towards the screen and then position the monitor at the end of your fingertips.

Height

The top of your monitor may be placed at eye level. This ensures that the neck remains in a neutral position and that the eyes can turn slightly downwards. This will make your eyes less tired.

Light

Also pay attention to the placement of the monitor in relation to the lamps and if necessary, a window. It is very annoying and distracting when the light reflects off the monitor. If possible, relocate the work area if there is too much light on the monitor.

How do you choose the right monitor arm?

Many different monitor arms are available. This makes it difficult to find the right one. The following 6 points can help you to make a selection:

1. How many monitors do you use?

If you use multiple monitors, this is important to include when choosing a monitor arm. It works best if you can attach all monitors to the same monitor arm and at the same height.

2. What are the dimensions and weight of your monitor arm?

Often the monitor arms are strong enough to carry your monitor (s). But it is always good to check this first. On most products you can find the minimum and maximum dimensions that your monitor may have for a particular monitor arm. In addition, the maximum carrying capacity is also stated.

3. What VESA size does your monitor have?

VESA stands for Video Electronics Standards Association and is a universal measure that is used to determine whether the monitor arm can be attached to the monitor. The VESA size can be measured at the back of your monitor. Here are holes for attaching the monitor to the monitor arm. To determine the size, you can measure the distance between the holes (horizontal x vertical in mm). This is equal to the VESA size. The minimum and maximum VESA size can be found in the specifications of the monitor arm.

4. How high should your monitor be placed?

When choosing a monitor arm, it is also important to consider the height at which the monitor should ultimately be placed. It will be very annoying if eventually the monitor cannot be set high or low enough. It is best to measure from the center of the VESA holes. This is because the minimum and maximum adjustment height of the monitor arm is also calculated from this point.

5. How long does the monitor arm need to be to set the correct distance?

To determine the correct length, it is important to consider your viewing distance and the depth of the desk. Subtract the desired viewing distance from the depth of the desk and you will know the minimum length of your monitor arm. If you share your workplace with several people, for example with flex workstations, then it is advisable to choose a long monitor arm so that multiple viewing distances can be reached.

6. How would you like to attach the monitor arm?

To avoid surprises while attaching the monitor arm, it is important to think about this in advance. Do you want to attach the monitor arm to the desktop with a clamp? This is the fastest and easiest option. Sometimes this is not possible due to the shape or thickness of the blade. Another option is a transit. To do this, you drill a hole in the blade and the monitor is attached to it. The monitor arm can thus be mounted anywhere on the desk, as it cannot be attached to the edge of the desk only.

Monitor arms for 1 monitor

Important when making your choice:

  • Check that the weight of the monitor arm can handle the weight of your monitor.
  • Measure the VESA size of your monitor and check the specifications of the monitor arm to see if it matches the mounting options of the monitor arm.
  • See if the monitor can be placed at the correct distance and height for you.
  • Think about how you want / can attach the monitor arm.

Monitor arms for 2 monitors

Important when making your choice:

  • Check that the weight of the monitor arm can handle the weight of your monitors.
  • Measure the VESA size of your monitors and check the specifications of the monitor arm to see if it matches the mounting options of the monitor arm.
  • See if the monitors can be placed at the correct distance and height for you.
  • Think about how you want / can attach the monitor arm.

Laptop and tablet holders for mounting on a monitor arm

These products can be added to a monitor arm if you work with a laptop and / or tablet. Even when working with a laptop and / or tablet, it is important to place the screen at the correct height. This prevents you from sitting bent over because the screen and keyboard are stuck together or because the screen has to be touched. This bent over posture puts a higher load on the body, which can cause RSI, CANS and back complaints.

Important when making your choice:

  • Choose the right monitor arm next to the laptop and / or tablet holder.
  • Check whether the dimensions and weight of your laptop / tablet are suitable for the holder.

Monitor arm with wall mounting

If you place the screen of your laptop and / or tablet at the correct height, it is no longer possible to operate the keyboard or screen. We therefore advise you to work with an external compact keyboard and ergonomic mouse.

In addition to mounting on a desktop, it is also possible to mount the monitor arm on a wall. An ergonomic viewing height can also be created with a mounting on the wall, with which RSI complaints can be prevented. The cables can be neatly concealed, so that your workplace looks tidy.

Important when making your choice:

First, determine whether the wall is strong enough to support the monitor and monitor arm.

Most monitor arms allow the monitor to pivot, tilt and swivel. If you also want to be able to adjust the monitor height (after mounting it at the correct height on the wall), check the specifications to see if this is also possible.

Measure the VESA size of your monitors and check the specifications of the monitor arm to see if it matches the mounting options of the monitor arm.

Check whether the monitors can be placed at the correct distance and height for you.
